Founded in the 5th century by the people of Umbria and located almost in the heart of Romagna; Cesena is known as the city of the Three Popes for giving rise to Pope VI, Pope VII and Benedetto XIII. It is also capital of the Wellness Valley. The Wellness Valley is an initiative that aims to make Romagna the first international district of expertise in the area of well-being and quality of life of people, starting from enhancing the human, social, historical, artistic, natural and food and wine heritage of the area.

It is also home to the Biblioteca Malatestiana which dates back to the 15th century; it is the first European civic library and with the only example of a humanistic monastic library perfectly preserved in the building. Its furnishings and book collection has been listed by UNESCO.
